Old Bridge

It is one of the symbols of the city and the only bridge that survived German destruction during World War II. In Roman times, in this stretch of the river, the narrowest, there was the first wooden passage, until arriving later, after several reconstructions in stone, the bridge that we cross today and where you can enjoy a romantic view of the river Arno, especially at sunset. With the construction of the private passage that crossed the river, the famous Corridoio Vasariano, for reasons above all of smells and decorum, the Medici decided to transfer the butchers and other shops that were on the bridge to another part of the city. In their place came prestigious goldsmiths, silversmiths and jewelers, who still today, with their precious windows, characterize the Ponte Vecchio.
